A GFCI may not reset because power is unavailable, a fault remains, or the device cannot provide protection. Follow the instructions for the exact device and have persistent problems assessed; never bypass it.
Understand the device’s purpose.
A ground-fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, is intended to reduce shock risk by interrupting power when it detects a ground fault. It is a safety device, not just a convenient switch for restoring an outlet.
Leviton explains that certain GFCIs intentionally prevent resetting when they are damaged, incorrectly wired, or unable to provide protection. A reset button that will not latch does not automatically mean the outlet just needs more force.

Record the exact symptoms.
Note whether the outlet has power, what its indicator light shows, and whether it has worked normally in the past. If other nearby outlets also lost power, include that information. Their locations can help an electrician understand the circuit arrangement.
Indicator meanings vary by product. Use the model’s instructions rather than assuming that every red, green, or unlit indicator means the same thing. An easily readable model number or a photo taken from a safe distance can help.
Do not turn a recurring trip into a routine.
If a reset does not work according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or the device trips again, stop using the affected outlet and arrange an assessment. Do not keep reconnecting an appliance to reproduce the issue, especially near water.
Testing instructions are specific to the device. Ask the electrician to show you the normal test procedure after the problem is resolved and explain what a successful test looks like for that installation.
Ask what the assessment found.
A useful explanation identifies whether the issue involves the device, connected equipment, power supply, or wiring. Ask what was corrected and whether other outlets are protected by the same device.
- What caused the loss of power or repeated trip?
- Was the protective device able to function correctly?
- Which outlets are affected by this GFCI?
- What testing and maintenance does this exact model require?
