Should you repair or replace a faucet?

Compare faucet repair and replacement using the leak location, fixture condition, available parts, installation fit, and your household’s needs.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A repair may address a worn component, while replacement may suit a damaged or unsuitable fixture. Identify where the water appears, then compare the actual repair with a compatible replacement and its complete installation scope.

Describe the problem precisely.

A drip from the spout, water around the base, and moisture below a sink are different observations. Note whether water appears only while the faucet runs or continues between uses. Describe loose operation or difficulty controlling the temperature as separate concerns.

Take a photo from a safe, dry location if useful. Keep the area accessible for the visit, but do not disassemble connections or reach near wet electrical equipment to investigate.

Ask what a repair would include.

Share the model or purchase information if you have it. Ask whether suitable parts are available and what the proposed repair addresses. An assessment should distinguish the faucet itself from its supply or drain connections.

If water flow is the concern rather than leakage, describe whether the issue affects both hot and cold water and whether other fixtures behave normally. Do not assume a new faucet will fix a whole-home pressure problem.

Choose a replacement that fits the installation.

Compare mounting arrangement, sink openings, spout reach, nearby clearance, controls, and the connections included with the product. For a customer-supplied faucet, confirm compatibility and installation availability before ordering.

EPA’s WaterSense label identifies bathroom sink faucets and accessories meeting its water-efficiency and performance criteria. Check the product’s stated application; the bathroom-faucet label should not be treated as a label for every type of kitchen or utility fixture.

Compare the full project, not just the finish.

Ask about removal of the old fixture, any connection changes, and the final operating and leak checks. Discuss how product coverage and workmanship coverage are handled, especially when you supply the fixture.

  • Is the proposed repair practical with available parts?
  • Does the replacement fit without unplanned modifications?
  • What work and materials are included?
  • What should you know about cleaning and routine care?

Keep the model and installation information for future service. A clear comparison makes it easier to choose based on the condition and function you need.
