AFCI vs. GFCI: what is the difference?

Learn how arc-fault and ground-fault protection differ, why one does not replace the other, and what to ask about a recurring trip.

THE SHORT ANSWER

AFCI protection addresses dangerous arcing associated with electrical fire hazards. GFCI protection addresses ground-fault shock hazards. They serve different functions; the appropriate protection depends on the circuit and installation.

ESFI distinguishes arc-fault protection from ground-fault protection. An AFCI responds to dangerous arcing conditions that can contribute to fires. A GFCI addresses leakage-current conditions associated with shock hazards. Neither label should be interpreted as a guarantee against every electrical danger.

The appearance of a TEST button does not by itself tell you every protective function a device provides. Read the visible label or existing documentation rather than opening equipment to identify it.

Treat a trip as a symptom to assess.

Record what was operating and which devices or rooms lost power. Note recent product changes or electrical work. The fact that a protective device tripped does not, on its own, establish that the device is defective.

Do not bypass protection, substitute a different device to avoid trips, or repeatedly reset a recurring fault. Leave the affected circuit off and arrange an assessment. Keep clear of wet, damaged, or sparking equipment.

Use the instructions for your actual device.

Keep manufacturer information with your home records. Follow the stated testing instructions and frequency for the installed product, and ask an electrician if you are unsure how to identify or operate it safely.

If a test does not produce the expected result, report that accurately. Do not open the receptacle or panel to investigate. The next step depends on the device and how it is connected to the circuit.

Ask clear questions before changing protection.

For an upgrade or repair, ask which protective function is needed and why. The applicable requirements depend on the location and scope of work; a general homeowner guide cannot establish the code requirements for your specific project.

  • What device is installed now?
  • What did the assessment find?
  • What protection does the proposed device provide?
  • How will the work be checked and documented?

Bring these questions into the proposal conversation so the recommendation is tied to the actual circuit.
